October Book Selection

A perfect choice for our Halloween weekend meeting. The murder of a young girl provided lots of discussion topics including the mother's abandonment of her family, growing up in the 70's, and our feelings about heaven and interactions from the other side. Overwhelming positive reaction to this book (with the exception of the "Sex scene"... which drew mixed reviews.  Most felt that if Susie had the opportunity to come back, details of the murder and the location of the body would have been the first thing that she would have talked about.)

The Lovely Bones

 Meeting:

  Friday, October 29th

Location: Dayna's House

Menu:

Our biggest turn out yet... with 21 members taking part in the meeting.  Dayna and Coco  hosted the evening which began with an upstairs feast and a downstairs book talk.

August Book Selection

The Notebook

by

Nicholas Sparks

 Meeting:

  Friday, August 27th

Movie Date then discussion to follow.

(Pictures and Update coming soon...)

Votes are in... Here is this month's selection:

This book was like a Boston  Sex in the City-Latina style.  We had lots to discuss including which of the Sucias we could most relate to and identify with.  I'm personally looking forward to the sequel.

Dirty Girls Social Club

by

Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez

 Meeting:

  Wednesday, June 30th

hosted by:

 Rebecca & Candace

Menu:

A variety of delicious Mexican food from Chili's.

A small crew  (Amy, Steph, Karen, Candace, Rebecca, Kerri & Gina) and a mellow night.  It was great just the same.  We also chose the books for the remainder of the year.

Pictures to follow.

Decided to go for both since they are very short reads.

Two good choices for this month with lots of material for discussion.  The group was divided about 50/50 in choosing their favorite book. While most of us liked Morrie and agreed that it made us re-examine our lives, the reaction to 5 People was mixed.  Some were disappointed and expected to finish with an understanding of heaven, while others among the group felt it was more about life and left it feeling satisfied.

Consider for next meeting:  Choose the next selection at the beginning of the night rather than the end

Serious discussions and lotsa laughs....

The Dance Par-tay girls even kicked it up a notch... literally!  Gotta luv those cartwheels and round-offs!

Following the lead of Oprah's Book Club for our first selection...

one hundred years of solitude

by

Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Ok... who was the ONLY anal one who actually finished this book before the meeting?!  The overwhelming consensus was that it was a very confusing story, hard to follow due to the abundance of similar names and weird story lines... even the avid readers among us had a tough time with this one.  At the meeting we voted on the next selection which will be the procedure from here on out.
